No matter how you look at it, Lübeck has always been a dominant force
and the "Queen of Hanse" within the Baltic. After the Berlin Wall and the Iron
Curtain came down and the Baltic States joined the EU, the "Mare Baltica"
is re-united and a variety of activities is blooming again, i.e. the economy,
culture and tourismus.
As before most of this development is centred on the Hansestadt Lübeck.
The port is growing and the same can be said for the ferry service and
exchange of cultural events. If you are looking for sea and sand, there are
some traditional seaside resorts like Travemünde, Niendorf, Timmendorfer Strand,
Scharbeutz, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf, all have wonderful white sandy beaches,
easy access to the sea with very clean and clear water, which is said has a healing
effect on many skin complaints.
Weather is always a talking point. The last few years we had long periods of
brilliant sunshine, with temperatures round 30° Celsius and with water temperatures
around 24° Celsius. The overall feeling is, that the global warming has a positiv
influence at the Baltic Sea. If the weather should not be favourable, there is
always something to do in Lübeck and surrounding area. There is the
"Karl-May- Festival" in an open air theatre.
